Notwithstanding the fact that it is one of the most proactive and responsive federating units in Nigeria, in the fight against the dreaded coronavirus pandemic, the Anambra state government has within this period not relented in its commitment to the infrastructural as well as other socioeconomic growth and development of the state.
This is because it is ever conscious and committed to its Social Contract with the citizenry as well as its vision and mission statements since coming on board over six years ago.
Irrespective of the total and partial socioeconomic lockdown necessitated by Covid 19, the ministry of basic education in partnership with the Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, ahead of other governments in Nigeria, introduced the “Teaching on Air Program” for senior and junior secondary school students.
Undeterred by the lockdown, Governor Willie Obiano inspected some ongoing projects such as the Mmiata Anam-Nzam road with a bridge at Mmiata-Anam in Anambra West local government area, Agbaja Abatete-Oraukwu-Alor bypass in Idemili North local government area, the hundred foot road erosion site at Nnewi in Nnewi North local government area and the International Conference Center, ICC, Agu-Awka in the state capital city.
Similarly, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Uchenna Okafor, on behalf of the governor inspected the ongoing construction of the the road from the Ezu river bridge in the Igbariam/Nando axis to Anaku and Omor towards Omasi-Agu, all in Ayamelum local government area to the Nsukka region of Enugu state.
Immediately after announcing relaxation of the lockdown, Governor Obiano, on Monday, May 4, 2020, held the first on-line Executive Council meeting with members of his cabinet accordance with the Covid 19 protocol on social distancing. The EXCO discussed important issues bordering on the fight against the coronavirus plague and distribution of palliatives to the citizenry in their one hundred and eighty one communities as well as educational development, in addition to efforts to resume aggressive rehabilitation of some deplorable roads in some parts of the state.
This was followed by the inauguration of a Committee to educate, sensitise and mobilise Ndi Anambra to reenact aggressive cultivation of vegetables and economic plants in their compounds. The Committee is headed by the governor’s Chief of Staff, Chief Primus Odili.
All these goes to reinforce the fact that from inception on March 17, 2014, the Obiano administration means well for the governed as evidenced in many of its people oriented policies, programs and actions such as; impressive security architecture, community choose your project initiative, health insurance scheme, popularly known as ASHIA, establishment of the biggest and state-of-the-art oxygen manufacturing plant at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku in Awka, Operation Light Up Anambra state among others.
Other egalitarian things done by the present state government include; establishment of Anambra Small Business Agency, ASBA, Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency, ANSIPPA, Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA. These Establishments are for the socioeconomic, rapid infrastructural and organised growth and development of the state.
Signature projects hitherto not in the state but have either been put in place or ongoing are; the three elegant flyovers at the Aroma, Kwata and Amawbia junctions of the state capital on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, the longest bridge in the state across the Omambala river from Otuocha to the Anambra crude oil field at Aguleri-Otu, the Golden Tulip Hotel at Agulu lake, the Onitsha shopping mall, the Court of Appeal, Awka, the ultra modern orientation camp of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Umuawulu-Mbaukwu and the ongoing cargo/passenger Airport at Umuleri in Anambra East local government area, etcetera.
Thanks to the massive investment and mutually beneficial partnership between the Obiano administration and the private sector, Anambra has become one of the major food baskets of Nigeria. From annual rice production of mere eighty thousand metric tonnes of rice in 2014, it has astronomically risen to over five hundred thousand metric tonnes today. Other food crops such and yam and cassava plus vegetables and livestock have witnessed significant increase in production.
In the final analysis, quality of life has improved tremendously in Anambra, since Governor Willie Obiano mounted the saddle of leadership six years ago. This explains the desperate quest by thousands of other Nigerian citizens to sneak into the state to do business, in spite of the lockdown induced by Covid 19 pandemic in the country and other parts of the world.
